Dr Sean Murphy RIP - Archived from 2019-
We are deeply saddened to hear of the recent passing of Dr Sean Murphy, class of 1956. Sean was an outstanding sportsman and academic during his time in Rockwell, attributes he maintained throughout his life. Our thoughts are with his friends and family at this time.
Lahinch Golf Club published a touching obituary on the event of Sean's passing, which we have included below:
OBITUARY:
"Dear Niall,
It is with deep sadness and shock that we heard of the death of Dr. Sean Murphy, Ennistymon and formerly of Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford who passed away suddenly on Monday 1st July.
Sean’s family hailed from Glann, Ennistymon and while his parents moved around Ireland due to work commitments, Sean was a frequent visitor to Lahinch for over seventy years visiting his aunt, Brid Vaughan, at the Atlantic Hotel.
Sean took up the game of golf in the 1960’s and joined Lahinch Golf Club playing alongside our retired greenkeeper, PJ Queally, who introduced him to the nuances of the short game.
As a student at Rockwell College, Sean played Hurling and Rugby but excelled at Athletics. After he qualified as a Doctor, he started working as a GP in Enniscorthy and served the local community until his retirement in 2006.
He was an active member of Enniscorthy Golf Club, winning numerous club competitions and re-joined Lahinch Golf Club when he returned to west Clare following his retirement in 2006.
Sean was a very caring and intuitive doctor who went to extraordinary lengths to ensure the care of his patients and it was not unusual for him to accompany an ambulance to Dublin to assist one of his patients.
Sean assisted as an ‘on-call’ medic at numerous South of Ireland Championships. He enjoyed Lahinch and became ‘part of the furniture’ over the past fourteen years. He revelled in the delights of the links, after his daily five mile walk, followed by breakfast or lunch in the clubhouse.
He was really looking forward to this week’s DDF Irish Open so it is important that we remember his good nature, smile, warm personality and quick turn of phrase including the many analogies he used when communicating his opinion. He was well respected by everyone at the Club and will be deeply missed by his many friends and colleagues at Lahinch Golf Club.
Sean will be reposing at Fanagan’s Funeral Home, Dundrum, Dublin 14 on Thursday 4th July from 10.00am with family in attendance between 6.00pm and 8.00pm. A Humanist Funeral Service will be held in the Victorian Chapel, Mount Jerome, Harold’s Cross on Friday 5th July at 3.30pm followed by cremation.
On behalf of the Club Council, Trustees, Officers, Committees, members and staff at Lahinch Golf Club, I wish to extend our deepest sympathy to his wife Kate; children Jane, Bronagh, Dairin, Kate, John; brother Denis; sisters Freda, Brid; extended family and friends.
Ar dheis De go raibh a anam dilis
Regards
Paddy Keane"
