RIP Paul McNaughton - Archived from 2022-

Dear Fellow Rockwellian,

It is with great sadness that the Union has learnt that Paul McNaughton (Class of 1970) passed away Sunday evening 6th November 2022.

Paul came to Rockwell as a Gaelic footballer, but Fr Michael Lavelle saw his talent early and honed his skills on the rugby pitch with the JCT and this was further extended under Fr Aidan Lehane’s guidance on the SCT where he represented Munster Schools and helped Rockwell to win the schools senior cup in 1970 in a team captained by David Ormond. He was a standout performer for Rockwell and was destined for higher honours in the sport.

Paul subsequently played for Leinster and won 15 caps for Ireland in the centre and played for Wanderers FC and Greystones RFC where he also served as President. He Managed the Irish Rugby team from 2008 - 2011.

A gifted sportsman he also played semi-professional soccer for Shelbourne and Bray Wanderers AFC in the League of Ireland, playing in the UEFA cup and 2 FAI cup finals with Shelbourne and represented Ireland at both amateur and university level in the sport. On top of that he played senior football and minor hurling for his home county Wicklow GAA and holds the unique distinction of being the only individual to play three sports in Irelands national stadiums.

After leaving Rockwell in 1970, Paul obtained an Honours Economic Degree from Trinity College Dublin and then spent 10 years with IDA (Ireland) based in Dublin and in the USA. On returning to Ireland he went on to establish Bank of Ireland's IFSC Fund's business before joining Deutsche Bank to establish their funds business in Ireland. He was overall Head of Deutsche Bank's Offshore Funds business before assuming the role of Global Head of Deutsche's Fund Servicing business worldwide. Paul left Deutsche Bank in August 2004 and went on to act as an advisor and non-executive director for several investment companies and other financial entities in Ireland including several alternative/hedge fund entities. He was the founding Chairman of the IFIA (Irish Funds Industry Association) and a member of the Irish Government Task Force on Mutual Fund Administration and was instrumental in the growth of the funds business in Ireland both for traditional and alternative asset classes.

Paul remained a lifelong supporter of Rockwell College and was happy to lend his rugby experience to the SCT on occasions and attended various Union events. He was the recipient of the Rockwell College Union Past Pupil of the Year Award in 2006 and officially opened the new Fr Aidan Lehane Sports Pavilion in Rockwell in 2018.

Above all, he was a true gentleman.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this time.
