Sean Cooney won the World Masters Marathon Championship (age category 75-79) in Perth Australia on the 6th of November. Sean hails from Mullingar and was in the class of 1959.
Sean’s time for the 26 mile/ 42 Km 2 lap course was 4 hrs and 19 minutes. He passed the 3rd placed Australian athlete after the 1st lap and eventually caught the 2nd place french runner at 37 kms. Sean’s pace helped him run all the way to the finish line in very warm conditions. 25 years ago, at the age of 51 Sean completed the Dublin marathon in 2 hours and 47 minutes. 20 master athletes from Ireland competed in these games.
The world masters championships are held every two years and over 4,000 athletes age 35 years plus competed in Perth in full track and field programme.
Sean participated in middle distance running in Rockwell and was also a member of the Cup winning SCT in '59.
